Ayush Mhatre CSK trail

17-year-old Mumbai teenager Ayush Mhatre was called for a trial by Chennai Super Kings on Thursday, April 3. This comes as big news for the youngster in the ongoing IPL 2025 season.

This is a report as per the Times of India. Mhatre went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction that was held in December last year. Now the youngster can come in as an injury replacement into the CSK side if that happens.

Mhatre went to Chennai from Rajkot, where he is currently at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy's zonal camp for under-19 cricketers. Talking about CSK, they have lost two of the three games they have played so far and are placed seventh on the IPL 2025 points table.

CSK CEO Confirms Ayush Mhatre's Trial Session

Meanwhile, CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan confirmed the development to TOI saying “Yes, we’ve called him for trials. He has impressed our talent scouts. No (injuries); if there is any need, we will do that. We are not picking anybody, it is just a trial,".

The franchise has asked the youngster to also attend the trial in November 2025 just before the mega auction. He was last seen in action during Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy semifinal encounter against Vidarbha in Nagpur, where he scored just nine and 18 runs in the two innings.

The batting prodigy scored a lot of runs in the last domestic Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy tournaments. He was Mumbai's fourth-highest run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy, scoring 471 runs in eight matches with two hundreds to his name. He also had a good Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament where he scored 458 runs in seven matches at a stunning average of 65.42.

Ayush is yet to make his T20 debut for Mumbai as well. He has also not played any form of T20I cricket before in his career. Some reports say this is a move by CSK to correct their ailing batting lineup, especially the top-order. CSK's top order has hardly contributed unanimously in the first three games of the season.
