Akash Deep, who has been declared fully fit by the NCA, will join the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) squad ahead of their clash against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at Ekana Stadium.
LSG is currently facing challenges with a depleted pace attack. Shardul Thakur has been the standout performer, while Avesh Khan, who joined the team in their second match, is still working on regaining his form. Digvesh Rathi has struggled with expensive bowling. With LSG managing only one win from three matches, Akash Deep's addition to the squad is timely, and he is expected to make his LSG debut against the Mumbai Indians.
Akash sustained his injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024-2025 and has been in rehabilitation since then. He missed the remainder of the Test series and took longer than usual to be declared fit. During his recovery, he trained alongside Jasprit Bumrah at the NCA; however, Bumrah's comeback has also been delayed, according to recent reports.
Akash Deep's breakthrough year was in 2024 when he played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, taking 7 wickets in 8 matches that season. Despite the expectation that RCB would retain him ahead of the mega auction, he was let go, and LSG signed him for 8 crore. He later made it into India’s Test team and performed well alongside Bumrah in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025, unfortunately picking up an injury midway through the series.
The inclusion of Akash Deep is a boost for both the Lucknow Super Giants and their coach, Zaheer Khan, as it will strengthen their pace attack for the remainder of the season. LSG has had a poor start, including a recent home defeat, which led to a serious confrontation between Rishabh Pant and LSG's owner Sanjiv Goenka, after the match.
