Sri Lanka Women’s hopes of lifting their first ODI tournament title since 2009 were dashed as they fell short by 97 runs against a dominant India Women in the final of the Sri Lanka Women’s Tri-Nation Series 2025 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Chasing a formidable 343-run target, Sri Lanka in second innings crumbled under pressure, managing 245 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 48.2 overs, despite a valiant 51-run knock from captain Chamari Athapaththu (51 runs off 66 balls).
India’s clinical bowling, led by Sneh Rana’s 4/38 Amanjot Kaur’s 3/54, sealed a comprehensive victory as the Women in Blue, who were the hot favourites before the tournament, delivered as per the expectations and won the trophy.
India Women Defeat Sri Lanka Women by 97 Runs to Lift the Trophy
Sri Lanka’s chase began disastrously with Hasini Perera (0 run off 3 balls) dismissed for a duck by Amanjot Kaur in the first over, leaving them 0/1. Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne (36 runs off 41 balls) steadied the innings, forging a 68-run partnership.
Gunaratne’s promising innings ended when Amanjot bowled her around her legs, breaking the backbone of the chase at 68/2 in 13.5 overs. Athapaththu fell in the 24th over to Rana.
Nilakshi de Silva, batting at No. 4, offered resistance with a brisk (48 runs off 58 balls), echoing her match-winning 56 runs against India earlier in the series. She stitched a 52-run stand for the fourth wicket with Harshitha Samarawickrama (26 runs off 32 balls), whose dismissal in the 33rd over to Amanjot triggered a collapse.
From 173/3, Sri Lanka were reduced to 192/7. Nilakshi perished in the 35th over bowled by Rana.
Anushka Sanjeewani (28 runs off 41 balls) and Sugandika Kumari (27 runs off 29 balls) came too late to challenge the visitors. Sri lanka lost their last three wickets in quick succession and got bundled out at 245 runs as India won the match by 97 runs and clinched the title.
Smriti Mandhana (116 runs off 101 balls), who scored a century in the first innings, was named Player of the Match.
