Summary

Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill has a chance to surpass former records set by Sunul Gavaskar and Don Bradman in the fifth Test at The Oval.

Gill staring at chasing records at The Oval

Shubman Gill stands on the brink of breaking historic records as he leads India into the fifth and final Test at The Oval starting July 31, with a chance to surpass legends Sunil Gavaskar and Don Bradman.

Shubman Gill’s fourth ton of the series was key behind India saving the Test match in Manchester and keeping it alive. Gill and KL Rahul batted for 431 balls, tiring out the England bowlers during their 188-run partnership.

Their good work was then carried on by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, both of whom scored centuries and added a 202-run stand. Meanwhile, heading into this Test match, Gill is already topping the run-scoring charts with 722 runs in the series so far at an average of 90.25.

Shubman Gill's Opportunity To Surpass Gavaskar, Bradman

At The Oval, Shubman Gill is just 11 runs behind Sunil Gavaskar’s record of most runs (732) by an Indian captain in a Test series (1978-79 vs West Indies). He is also 53 runs short of overtaking Gavaskar’s tally of 774 runs, which is the most runs scored by an Indian batter in a bilateral Test series.

Shubman Gill is also just 89 runs short of Don Bradman’s record of most runs in a single Test series by a captain. Bradman scored 810 runs in the 1936–37 Ashes series against England,a record that has been unbroken for nearly 90 years. Gill has a great opportunity to surpass the former legend with a telling impact in the final Test.

England Without Stokes, Archer At The Oval

Meanwhile, England have already named their playing XI and have made as many as four changes to the side. They are without their regular skipper Ben Stokes and speedster Jofra Archer in their side for the final Test. That has taken away a lot of sting out from the side and India have a golden opportunity to bank on England’s weakened bowling lineup at The Oval.
