Change of Guard in BCCI? President Roger Binny Nears Age-Cap Cutoff

Roger Binny, the former India all-rounder and current president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will likely vacate his post as he turns 70 on Saturday, July 19. This is because of BCCI’s age-cap rule.

Binny became BCCI president in October 2022, taking over from Sourav Ganguly. Since then, Indian cricket has witnessed historic highs. The side won the men’s T20 World Cup win in 2024 and the 2025 Champions Trophy. He was also in charge when the Women’s Premier League (WPL) was launched.

Before becoming an administrator, Binny was known for his performances on the field. He was the highest wicket-taker in India’s 1983 World Cup-winning campaign. In his international career, he played 27 Tests and 72 ODIs, picking up 124 wickets.

What Is the BCCI Age-Cap Rule?

The BCCI’s age-cap rule is part of the administrative reforms that came into effect after the Lodha Committee’s recommendations in 2016. One of the major suggestions made by the committee was to bring in a limit on the age of officials holding posts in the cricket board.

As per the current rule, no individual can serve as an office-bearer in the BCCI once they turn 70. The Supreme Court of India approved these recommendations, making the age-cap an official part of the board’s constitution.

Binny reaching this age limit means he will not be eligible to continue unless there is a special exemption or change in the rules. Binny will celebrate his 70th birthday on July 19 and he may have to leave the post unless the board decides otherwise.

Who Could Replace Roger Binny as BCCI President?

Rajeev Shukla is the front-runner to take over as interim BCCI president. He is currently the vice-president and has worked in the board for many years. Shukla has also served as IPL chairman in the past.

Kushan Sarkar, a senior journalist with PTI, recently reported that Shukla is the most likely option to take over once Binny’s term ends. However, another possibility being discussed is that Binny could be allowed to continue until September when the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) takes place.
